Journal (2026-09-09) - Farmers market & rain gutter guards

Last Saturday I went to a farmers market to help a friend of mine. I haven't been to a farmers market since I was a kid, so it was an interesting experience. This one seemed much more organized than the ones I remember, seeing how everyone had a fold out cover tent, tables, and food trucks. I was expecting something like a weekend fleamarket down by the tracks. I guess this one was a little more up town.

The one thing I didn't like about it though was the heat. It's way too hot outside to be doing a farmers market right now in my opinion. The temperature got over 100F right at the afternoon, which is when we packed everything back up and called it a day. It all seemed busy to me, but my friend said it was a slow day. I don't think I would be able to hold up on a "busy" day if this was anything to go by with it being as hot as it was.

When I got back home, I was so wiped out tired that I had a 4 hour nap in my chair beside the AC window unit! When I woke up, it felt like a new day despite being late in the evening. It was a little disorienting, but I rolled with it and made breakfast and coffee for supper that night. It was a good night.

Change of subject!

It's been about two years since I've installed the rain gutter and spouts in the back of the house. I did this so it would break the fall of rain water rushing down the roof, which has been somewhat helpful, but around me are two large sycamore trees and a black walnut tree that are constantly dropping their leaves into the gutter.

Every month I'll clean them out, but this time I decided to buy some gutter guards to hopefully keep out the leaves and twigs.

Also I have a brief update on the ants in my pantry situation. After spraying around the house, particularly the wall near the ceiling in my kitchen, the ant invasion stopped. I also noticed a few dead roaches spring up out of nowhere on the ground... I didn't know those suckers were getting in the house, but I guess they're gone now!

It seems that there's a wall in my kitchen that bugs are traversing and coming out near the ceiling, which if I recall correctly from my plumbing adventures beneath the house, there's a large opening in the floor and wall down there. It's kind of hard to describe without pictures because of how it's built, but the interior wall is simply made up of large vertical barn wood boards precariously nailed into the side of a foundation sill (this is load bearing too might I add.) Oh well, I'm just glad the ants are gone.
